Fats, Oil and Grease General Information

The North Carolina Department of Environment and Natural Resources requires most cities in North Carolina to operate a Fats, Oil & Grease (FOG) Program designed to prevent these substances from entering the sewer system.  FOG discharged into the sewer system causes blockages in sewer flow.  It also causes problems at the waste treatment plants.  Some components of our Commercial FOG Program are as follows:

  •
  •
  1. Educating sewer customers about the problems caused when fats, oils and grease (FOG) are put into the sewer system.
  2. Ensuring proper devices are in place to prevent the discharge of appreciable amounts of FOG.
  3. Ensuring FOG removal devices are cleaned on a regular basis.
  4. Assisting commercial customers with FOG related issues.
